A Sustainable Diwali: Eco-friendly decor ideas with tools

Diwali means light, grand celebrations and endless fun with friends and family. It’s an auspicious occasion in several Indian households. Families get together to decorate their homes with sacred lamps, glittering fairy lights, colourful candles, and light firecrackers.

Most people leave no stones unturned to rejoice during Diwali. But lately, nature lovers and environmentalists have criticised the Diwali celebrations for being wasteful and polluting. Bursting firecrackers not only add to noise pollution but also release nitrates, lead, sulphur dioxide, magnesium, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. These harmful pollutants cause smog, which can lead to respiratory ailments, skin problems, irritation and rashes.

It’s better to celebrate Diwali safely, not just for the environment, but also for you and your loved ones. Why not use something that you are bound to throw away? Here’s how you can use common tools as Diwali decor.

A Warm Welcome

If you have tools that you mean to throw away, you can always repurpose them! Your trusty spanner may be rusty now but they can be upcycled in a few easy steps.

You need:

  1. Old spanner
  2. Epoxy, polyurethane or cyanoacrylate-based adhesive
  3. Plyboard – 16×20”
  4. Fairy lights

Method:

  1. Clean the spanner and plyboard thoroughly.
  2. Attach the spanner to the bottom of the board with your chosen adhesive—follow the packet instructions for the adhesive.
  3. Arrange the fairy lights to spell the word WELCOME. You may glue them in place or wrap the string around the nails.

Grab your old rake—if it doesn’t have a handle, then you don’t need to worry about removing it. Simply clean it and attach it to your kitchen wall. You can hang your utensils from the teeth of the rake.
