Types of Electrodes Used in Agriculture

Farming and welding have more in common than you may think. An astute farmer would agree a farm can’t run without welding. To keep equipment working in top order, particularly during critical seasons of harvesting and planting, welding and hard-facing are must-have skills. A solid working knowledge of these processes comes in handy when equipment malfunctions and you need to quickly repair it to continue working. To keep your farm running smoothly, consider investing in electrodes—but how should you do this?

Types of Electrodes

For farming applications, you can choose from 4 different types of electrodes.

Low hydrogen carbon steel

These electrode types offer good weld beads that are perfect for welding and cutting thicker materials. They also offer incredible durability and easy arc generation and retention. Low hydrogen carbon steel electrodes are effective in welding carbon steels and low alloy steels.

Mild steel

These electrode types are among Tata Agrico’s top-selling electrodes. Made from high-quality, low concentrations of carbon steel deposits, they are extremely useful on a farm. They have the tensile strength to sustain a long-standing arc and are widely used to fabricate and repair pipes, equipment and more.

Mild steel (non-ISI grade)

Crafted with prime steel wire rods, non-ISI grade mild steel electrode ensures low spill and less smoke emission during welding. These factors are favourable on a farm where you may be surrounded by livestock.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel electrodes maintain a consistent weld quality irrespective of weather and temperature. Therefore, you can use these electrode types during monsoon as well—or any off-season period.

Farmer continuously need to modify and repair equipment and machinery to serve their specific needs. This immediate ability to alter animal pens, gates chutes, etc., is a massive advantage to the farmer. Repairing a broken combine or plough in the field by welding the damaged part can save time and the crop. The requirements of livestock can usually be taken care of with mild steel electrodes. Dairy cattle and all of their entire system require stainless steel electrodes.

Welding Safety

There are a few things to remember when you weld on the farm:

  • Protect yourself from gases and fumes. Always weld in a well-ventilated, open room.
  • Always wear protective clothing.
  • Do not touch live electrical parts barehanded or wet hands. Always wear a glove and make sure they don’t have holes in them.
  • Never weld in a closed space or near feed bags, diesel, hay, gasoline, hydraulic fluids or any inflammable materials.
